The Importance of Knowing the Location of Your Septic System

RCI Septic Service • May 1, 2023

As a home owner, you should know the location of your septic tank and leach field so that you can properly maintain the area and not cause any unnecessary damage which could result in system repair or failure.

You should not drive vehicles (cars/trucks) over your septic system or park vehicles on it. This does not include small equipment such as a small tractor or riding lawn mower. Always avoid heavy vehicles driving over or parking on/near your system like those used for oil deliveries, pool water filling, etc.

Grass is safe to be planted over your septic system. You should be careful not to plant woody plantings such as trees or shrubs because your system could be damaged by underground roots.

It is not recommended to build over your septic tank or leach field. This includes patios, porches, pools, etc. as they would need to be removed for inspection, maintenance and repairs. The weight of anything built over a septic tank could damage the unit. Building over a leach field can compact soils or damage the underground pipes causing the septic system to fail.
