When a septic system fails or a system is needed for new construction, a test pit must be done to determine the seasonable high water table. A licensed septic designer must be present to witness the test pit and look at all of the different soil levels. Depending on the town you live in a town inspector may also need to witness the test pit. The State of New Hampshire requires new septic systems to be permitted through the NH Department of Environmental Services Subsurface Systems Bureau Department.
Using an excavator, a hole is dug six to seven feet deep in the area of the proposed leach field. Perc tests are also done in the area to determine the rate that water moves through the soil; this determines the size of the proposed system.
After the data is gathered the designer will have the information they need to design the proper system. They work with the NH DES to obtain approval for construction so that the new system can be installed. NH DES has a fact sheet on their website www.des.nh.gov with all NH test pit and perc test requirements. The approved plans will also be sent to the perspective town for approval as well.
If the leach field is not installed in an area with suitable soils and proper drainage it will not function properly in an environmentally sound manner. If you have any questions about your septic system or leach field, feel free to contact us at 603-432-4840.
